As the combat sports world eagerly awaits the blockbuster boxing showdown between Francis Ngannou and Anthony Joshua on 8th March in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the spotlight is on both fighters. While both Joshua and Ngannou have been the centre of attention, the recent insights from former UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem have caught the interest of the fans
The Francis Ngannou Phenomenon- From Homelessness To The Tyson Fury Test
Overeem, who faced Ngannou in a title eliminator bout back in December 2017 at UFC 218, knows firsthand the power and ferocity of the Cameroonian-born fighter. Their clash ended with a highlight-reel knockout in favor of Ngannou. And now, years later, Overeem is in awe of how far Ngannou has come.
The former UFC heavyweight champion, after parting ways with the promotion, displayed an unprecedented growth in professional boxing, and his debut in the squared circle- against WBC champion Tyson Fury last October remains a staple performance.
Despite losing a controversial split decision, Ngannou pushed Fury to the brink, almost causing the upset of this generation. His raw power and knockout ability were evident, leaving fans and experts impressed.
Speaking to Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie, “The Demolition Man” said that he believes this experience has prepared Ngannou for his upcoming clash with Joshua. a two-time former unified world heavyweight champion, who is no stranger to the limelight. His technical prowess and championship pedigree are undeniable.
However, Overeem points out some vulnerabilities. Joshua’s fight rhythm is high due to his numerous bouts, but his confidence doesn’t match that of Ngannou. Additionally, the weight difference could play a crucial role in the outcome.
“In this fight, I can see a Francis Ngannou who is more confident and when I look at Anthony Joshua, he had a lot of fights right so his fight rhythm is high but I’m not seeing the same confidence and as a fighter, I pay attention to those things. Those small little details, and also, the weight difference,” said Overeem. [H/T MMA News]
