The newly crowned UFC women’s bantamweight champion Julianna Pena is ready to fight an immediate rematch with the former champion Amanda Nunes whom she defeated to win the title at UFC 269. At UFC 269, Julianna Pena turned the mixed martial arts world on its axis as she defeated the greatest women mixed martial arts fighter of all time, Amanda Nunes. The fight was going well for Amanda Nunes who was defending her bantamweight title against Pena. She landed some good shots on Pena and also took her down in the first round. But as the second round progressed Nunes started to faint and Pena started to gain momentum as she started to sting Nunes and then eventually took her back and submitted her. This was one of the biggest upsets in UFC history.
After the fight, Julianna Pena has now offered to rematch Amanda Nunes.
“Everybody thinks I am just only versed on the ground or that I’m just a ground person, but in mixed martial arts you have to be versed everywhere: on the feet, in the clinch, and I’m confident on the ground,” Pena told MMA Junkie and other media at the UFC 269 post-fight news conference. “Wherever the fight goes, I’m comfortable,” Julianna Pena said.
“Amanda’s been such a great champion, and she’s done so much for the sport, so for me to take down arguably the greatest of all time is something that’s still sinking in right now,” Julianna Pena said.
“We can do it next; I’m free next month, two months from now – whenever they want to do it, I’m ready,” Pena said. “If she wants to do a rematch, we can do a rematch” Julianna Pena concluded.
Amanda Nunes also reacted to her first loss in the last 7 years.
“Honestly, it’s no surprise at all,” Nunes said in her post-fight interview in the cage following the fight. “I know she’s a warrior. I know she can come forward, and I know she can get hit and still keep moving forward.
“I just today checked out. I still need to work on a couple of things. I’m going to keep working until I fix them, and soon I will come back to the gym and come back here. Thank you guys for all the cheers. I’ll see you guys all again soon.”
“Honestly, I did everything tonight,” Nunes said. “I trained very hard for this, but I feel like I still, like, fought with a couple of things I thought I fixed, but they came back tonight. Congratulations to Julianna. She’s a warrior. I knew that the whole time. I’m going to go back to the gym and train hard and then come back strong.”
