Former UFC’s Interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje says that he wants to fight the winner of Conor Mcgregor and Dustin Poirier for the Lightweight championship.

Many people thought that Gaethje could be the one to give Khabib trouble inside the Octagon. Although he became just the second man to take a round from the lightweight champ, Khabib would end up submitting Justin with little issue. Following the fight, Khabib revealed that he was retiring from MMA after making a promise that he would not compete without his recently deceased father.

Considering that Former interim lightweight champ Justin Gaethje believes that Khabib Nurmagomedov is truly retired from MMA. With that being the case, he hopes to get a crack at the title against the winner of an upcoming key lightweight matchup.

At UFC 257 the former champ Conor Mcgregor will return to fight the former interim champ, Dustin Poirier. Both of them had the crack at the undisputed champion Khabib but both could not solve the puzzle of the champion. But since Nurmagomedov is not in the picture they can claim to fight for the belt.

However, for Justin, his goal is to fight someone in early 2021 and then get the winner of McGregor-Poirier 2 for the belt.

“I’m number one so of course I want to fight for that f*****g belt, that’s why I’m here. Poirier and McGregor are fighting soon so I want to fight the winner of that,” Gaethje said to The Schmo. “I wholeheartedly believe you should be coming off a win to fight for a belt. So my job now is to get a win.”

Although Justin believes he needs to be coming off a win, he wouldn’t mind not having to fight again and getting an immediate title shot.

“I want to fight for the belt and if it is the winner of that fight then I would, in turn, need to beat somebody first. But, I’ll just fight the winner for the belt, I’m down for that, too,” Gaethje added.

Who's next for Justin Gaethje?

Justin Gaethje is coming off a second-round submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title. Before that, he scored a dominant fifth-round TKO win over Tony Ferguson to claim the interim title. Despite Khabib being adamant that he was no longer going to be fighting, Dana White refuses to accept this and strip him of the title.

However, Justin Gaethje tends to believe the Dagestani’s retirement. Speaking in a recent interview, he explained that save for a mega-fight with GSP, we will likely never see Nurmagomedov in the cage again. Therefore he hopes to get the shot at the vacant title, against the winner of the upcoming rematch between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.
