The day will come when Justin Gaethje will have to hang up his gloves, but the former Interim UFC Lightweight Champion believes he can still pull off in the Octagon for a couple of more years.
“The Highlight” is 2-2 in his last four fights in the UFC and most recently, picked up a hard-fought majority decision win against Rafael Fiziev in the co-main event at UFC 286 last month.
The victory was Gaethje’s comeback from the loss he suffered to Charles Oliveira at UFC 274 in May last year and soon afterward, he called out former adversary Dustin Poirier for a rematch of their April 2018 clash which Poirier had won. “The Diamond” also thumbed up for the rematch in his response.
By 37, I would like to not be doing this anymore: Justin Gaethje
However, ahead of any progress is made towards the rematch, Gaethje has already been contemplating about retirement and believes it could be one of his last few fights in the cage. However, the 34-year-old believes he can still continue for three more years.
“It’s just the fact of the matter. I would say by 37, I would like to not be doing this anymore,” said Gaethje during a recent interview with MMA Fighting. “I’m 34 now. So, two, or three years is a long time. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s not that long.”
“I’ve been doing this for 12 to 15 years. So ultimately it is the backend of my career in this sport. That’s the train of thought that I have, we’re so emotional after these fights… But that was my thought process, I’m not gonna be here forever. So I’m glad you guys are here to enjoy this with me,” he added. [H/T BJPenn.com]
