UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is being targeted to defend his title for the sixth time in March or April against his former opponent Leon Edwards. According to the latest reports going around Kamaru Usman is all set to defend his welterweight title against Leon Edwards in a rematch. The duo previously fought on 19 December 2015 at UFC on Fox 17. The fight was a competitive battle between both of them but it was Usman who used his combinations of striking and elite wrestling to nullify Edwards’s offense. Now the pair is targeted to face each other after 6 years. The fight will be Usman’s sixth title defense and it will be Leon’s first title shot. The news of the fight is reported by Ariel Helwani in the latest episode of MMA HOUR.
Kamaru Usman has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest welterweight fighters of all time and he may be just a few title defenses away from being considered the greatest welterweight of all time. UFC President Dana White has already called him the greatest welterweight fighter of all time. Kamaru Usman has defended his welterweight title five times against the top contenders like Jorge Masvidal (twice), Colby Covington (twice), and Gilbert Burns. Usman dominantly won the welterweight title against the champion Tyron Woodley.
Kamaru Usman in his last fight fought Colby Covington in a rematch after getting the TKO win in the fifth round in their first fight. He defeated Colby via decision in their rematch.
Leon Edwards’s last loss was against Kamaru Usman in 2015. Since then he has rallied 9 consecutive wins. He is 9-0-1 in his last 10 fights. He was scheduled to fight former two-time title challenger Jorge Masvidal at UFC 269 but the fight was scrapped as Masvidal pulled out due to an injury. Leon was targeted to fight a short notice opponent but he declined and said that he will wait for the title shot as he felt he deserved to fight for the UFC welterweight championship.
“I feel (the UFC) sees it,” Edwards said. “They now believe I am well-deserving. There is no one else for Usman to fight. I’m the guy saying ‘yes’ all the time. I’m the guy fighting. I feel the promotion and I am on the same page, let’s say that.”
In his last UFC fight, he fought the top UFC superstar Nate Diaz. He dominated Nate for five rounds and got the much-deserved decision win.
