UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman says he will be willing to move up to the middleweight division and fight Marvin Vettori if he beats Israel Adesanya at UFC 263 next month.
Kamaru Usman is coming off a highlight-reel knockout of Jorge Masvidal in their rematch at UFC 261. He first defeated Masvidal at UFC 251 via decision but wanted to finish him to put an end to their rivalry. He knocked him out with a brutal right hand in the second round. Usman who was referred to as a wrestler has shown off his power in three of his past four wins by taking out Covington, Gilbert Burns, and most recently becoming the first man to knock out Masvidal in the UFC.
Kamaru Usman will fight at Middleweight
UFC President Dana White has said on multiple occasions that Kamaru’s next fight will be against Colby Covington who is considered as the toughest fight of Kamru’s career to date. They both fought at UFC 245 and Usman got the TKO in the late fifth round in the fight which Covington was winning on the judges’ scorecard. But it seems like the welterweight champion has some other plans that he might consider but only on certain conditions.
Kamaru Usman has said he would not move to middleweight with a dream to become a two-division champion as the middleweight champion Israel Adesanya is a real good friend of him. But he said he might consider if Adesanya losses to Vettori and a new champion sits on the thrown then there are possibilities of a matchup.
“Yes I do want to see how those play out because there’s a lot of implications,” Usman said. “If Leon looks spectacular, it makes sense. If Nate looks spectacular, that could make sense as well. With the whole Marvin and Israel situation, I don’t necessarily want to think about that. I’m 100 percent behind Izzy and I think he can pull it out. I love Marvin as well but I think Izzy can pull that one out. He’s done it before and I think he can and I think he will. But if there was a case to where I would actually go up and challenge for that belt it would be without Izzy being in the picture. So if Izzy’s not champ, then it’s something I could take a look at.”
Israel Adesanya will be putting his belt on the line against Marvin Vettori at UFC 263 in June. This will be their rematch at they both fought each other at the beginning of their UFC careers where Adesanya defeated him via decision.
