UFC 249: Kamaru Usman claims it was Jorge Masvidal who turned down UFC 249 fight

A fight between champion Kamaru Usman and BMF title holder Jorge Masvidal is expected to go down in near future.

The duo were expected to fight at UFC 252 in July however nothing was set in stone. The negotiations were reportedly underway, however the recent pandemic has left everything on hold for a while.

The fight was then considered for UFC 249 as the main event fell through. Even the negotiations were away however the fight couldn’t materalise. The entire card then was postponed indefinitely. Reportedly Masvidal wanted more money for the fight. However Usman believes extra money was just an excuse to not fight.

“I don’t know exactly what was said from their end, but I know when the UFC says something like that, it pretty much means they probably came out and said ‘we want $10 million’ or something crazy like that where you know you’re not going to get [it] but that’s just easier way of turning down the fight than you actually saying ‘no, I don’t want to fight right now,” Usman said when speaking to MMA Fighting.

Usman claimed he was all ready to volunteer his services on short notice. He was ready for a tailored camp and a big weight cut to save the card.

“I was ready to go. I was training. I got in the gym. Obviously, I wasn’t training as regularly as before that opportunity came about. So after that I started training, I started dieting. That was maybe going to be a 25-pound weight cut for me in two weeks to get down to weight and fight the fight and I was willing to do it to save the event but I guess he wasn’t.”

Usman claims the rivalry between him and Masvidal is getting ‘personal’. He believes it’s not Masvidal but his management who handles his social media.

Usman is coming of one of the greatest fights of his career. He defended his belt for the first time against arch rival Colby Covington. In a back and forth battle, Usman was able to secure a fifth round TKO.
