Kamaru Usman, the reigning UFC Welterweight Champion is aiming to make a jump across two weight classes above and land into Light Heavyweight, after he faces Leon Edwards in their rematch at UFC 278 next month.
Having made his UFC debut against Edwards at UFC on Fox 17 in December 2015, Kamaru Usman solified his place in the 170-pound division and has been the titleholder since March 2019, defeating Tyron Woodley in the co-main event of UFC 235.
Now, five title defenses later, including double victories against Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal, as well as fending off Gilbert Burns once, “The Nigerian Nightmare” has established himself as the greatest in the division and has also clawed into the top spot of UFC Men’s P4P rankings.
Kamaru Usman wants Jiri or Jan at 205
As he prepares for the rematch against Edwards, set to headline UFC 278 on 20th August at the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, Usman has revealed his next modus operandi- jumping up two divisions and into the 205 and is willing to take on either the reigning champion Jiri Prochazka or former titlist Jan Blachowicz.
“We’re gonna go in there and we’re completely focused on Leon Edwards,” Usman told TMZ Sports in a recent interview, “But after Leon Edwards, we have our sights set on (Light Heavyweight), whether it’s Jan or whether it’s Jiří, whoever it is, that’s what we want.”
“I want to prove to the world that there’s a reason why they say pound-for-pound. That means pound-for-pound at any given time, any given moment, any given weight, I can go in there and not only hold my own, I can be victorious. I wanna be able to prove that,” Usman added. [H/T MMANews.com]
A fight against Prochazka will earn Usman a direct shot at the Light Heavyweight title, with a chance to become champ-champ. However, “BJP” recently announced that he wants Glover Teixeira in an immediate rematch.
