UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman recently shared his thoughts on the UFC Tampa main event between Joaquin Buckley and Colby Covington, praising Buckley’s performance while acknowledging Covington’s efforts despite his loss.
During the latest episode of his Pound 4 Pound podcast, Usman commented on the fight, which ended in a third-round TKO victory for Buckley due to a cut on Covington’s right eyelid. Usman noted that Buckley did an impressive job shutting down Colby Covington’s wrestling and securing the win.
Kamaru Usman Reveals Why Colby Covington Lost Against Joaquin Buckley
“Everybody knows as the fight gets later, Covington gets a little bit more comfortable,” Usman said. “So it was going to be how quick he was able to get the ring rust off and get going, and Buckley didn’t really allow him to do that. It looked like there were times it was back-and-forth, and it looked like Covington was coming back… So he didn’t look bad.”
Usman also reaffirmed his willingness to fight any of the top welterweight contenders upon his return to the octagon. He responded to Buckley’s post-fight callout by promising to come after all of the contenders when he is healthy.
“Buckley, Garry, ‘JDM,’ Shavkat, it doesn’t matter… It seems like every week we get on here and I have to do this, no one’s listening. When I’m healthy, I’ll whoop everyone of y’all, doesn’t matter who it is. I’ve gone through this division and then I started going through the division again, so it doesn’t matter.”
