UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman is looking to take his first step in the squared circle, but his preferred opponent is Canelo Alvarez, not Jake Paul, and the MMA fighter reveals why so.

Everyone has a puncher’s chance: Kamaru Usman

throughout last year, YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul has headlined some of the biggest PPV events, taking on the likes of former MMA champions Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley and was recently slated to take on Hasim Rahman Jr. on 6th August, a fight which is now cancelled.

Kamaru Usman, the number one P4P fighter in the UFC, meanwhile, is gearing up for a rematch against his forst UFC opponent, Leon Edwards, at UFC 278 on 20th August defending his 170-pound belt.

Aside from his spectacular MMA career, Usman recently landed a movie role and has also been calling for a boxing debut. “The Nigerian Nightmare” already possesses brutal knockout power, evident in his wins over Jorge Masvidal and Gilbert Burns and is highly eager to don the sparring gloves as well.

While taking on “The Problem Child” will no doubt be a huge payday for him, Usman believes there’s a little risk to that reward. While he has no doubt of making easy work of Paul in the ring, he also cited that a “puncher’s chance” can easily bring about a huge upset.

For this reason, speaking on the “I Am Athlete” podcast, Usman said that his mind is settled for a fight against Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed super middleweight world champion.

“Me fighting Jake Paul, I’m helping him,” said Usman, “I beat Jake Paul, nobody cares. You’re supposed to beat him. I still get a bank account now. I still get that. I beat Canelo, biggest athlete in the world, not even close, 100 million in the bank. If I’m gonna gamble, I’m gonna gamble well.”

“Absolutely,” Usman addressed whether facing Paul has its own risks, “Listen, me and him get in a scrap right now, he could touch me. I’m not naive or ignorant enough to think – let them put it on the news. I’m a realist. I know I’m gonna dog walk him, but at the same time, everyone has a puncher’s chance.” [H/T MMA Junkie]
