The UFC 235 co-main event on Saturday night, March the 2nd, featured a welterweight championship fight between ‘The Nigerian Nightmare,’ Kamaru Usman, and former UFC welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley. After five-rounds of all-around dominance, courtesy of Kamaru Usman, the UFC fraternity was now ready to announce its latest addition to the list of welterweight champions.

During the championship contest between the pair, Usman seemed to be the aggressor while Woodley looked devoid of any game plan. After successfully landing a number of takedowns, Woodley was able to keep the ex-champion at bay, thereby reducing his risk of getting caught with a Woodley haymaker. At the end of five rounds, a unanimous decision win was awarded to Kamaru Usman, making him Africa’s first UFC world champion.

Following his win over Tyron Woodley on Saturday, Kamaru Usman’s stake in the UFC has been on a steady rise. After the fight, MMA manager and personal confidant of Usman, Ali Abdelaziz, was quick to announce his next fight which could be a potential championship defense against latest UFC welterweight entrant, Ben Askren. A victory over ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler on the UFC 235 main card seems to have had a positive effect on Ben Askren’s trajectory in the UFC, making him the next big prospect for the promotion’s welterweight division.
