When Amanda Nunes and Kayla Harrison meet, Kayla Harrison wants the greatest version of her.
On Saturday, Harrison defeated Julianna Pena to win the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship. Inside the Prudential Center in Newark, the two collided. Harrison won the 135-pound title with a kimura submission finish.
Following the fight, it was made public that Amanda Nunes intends to come out of retirement and run for the title she previously held. Harrison and “The Lioness” also engaged in a staredown.
Kayla Harrison on the Comeback of Amanda Nunes
Kayla Harrison spoke to reporters following UFC 316. When asked about Amanda Nunes, the newly minted champion said she wants “The Lioness” to be in elite form when they clash (via MMAJunkie).
“Listen, I’m going to give Amanda as much time to prepare, I want her to be the best her,” Harrison said at the UFC 316 post-fight press conference. “I’m going to be the best me, and we’re going to go in there and make absolute magic in the UFC women’s division. We’re going to break some records and make some history. We’re both going to make a lot of money doing it, and we’re going to bring women’s MMA to a whole new level.”
At American Top Team, Harrison and Nunes used to train together. For a long time, the two thought they could fight. To concentrate on her own gym, Nunes finally severed her relationship with ATT.
After successfully defending his championship against Irene Aldana in 2023, Nunes announced his retirement from professional mixed martial arts competition. Nunes would quickly hint at a potential return. She even uploaded a video of herself seeking Dana White to speak with her about business while sporting a UFC fight kit.
On June 26, Nunes will be admitted into the UFC Hall of Fame. In UFC history, “The Lioness” was the first women’s “champ-champ.”
