UFC 234 was one of the saddest moments in the life of Kelvin Gastelum. He was supposed to be headlining the event, facing Robert Whittaker for the UFC Middleweight Title, but the fight never happened. A last minute injury suffered by Whittaker saw the fight cancelled.
Gastelum did not take the loss of the title opportunity well. He brought out the title that he had been supposed to fight for and declared himself the new Middleweight Champion. Since then, the time has passed and Gastelum is back with a title opportunity. He will be facing Israel Adesanya for the UFC Interim Middleweight Title. During a media conference, he was asked about the title, and why he had brought it out with him.

He said that he felt he should not be skipped over, and it was his way of sending that message.
‘That was just my way of saying, ‘guys I’m here to fight, I’m here to do my job.’ It was my way of saying that I’m not going to get skipped over. I deserve this shot. I’ve been fighting in this organization for six years. It’s so hard to get a title shot. I was not just going to stand by and do nothing.”
He went on to say that while he knew that the move had been out of his character, he had enjoyed the moment. He was called a ‘w**ker’ by people and was booed, but he had enjoyed it.
