Kevin Holland, the UFC welterweight contender had the perfect utility of his Octagon skills away from the cage, as the mixed martial artist became the savior after subduing a man who shot off a gun at a restaurant in Houston, Texas in the late hours of Monday. The former XKO Middleweight Champion was able to contain the shooter in a rear-naked choke submission hold until the police arrived at the scene.

That was the best way to defend myself: Kevin Holland describes using his ground game to hold off the shooter

The incident took place when Kevin Holland and his friend Patrick Robinson were having sushi at a restaurant when a loud gunshot was heard nearby and the two saw a man jostling with the shooter in an attempt to snatch away the gun.

The 29-year-old, who trains in self defense along with MMA and is a fan of Batman, wasted no time in jumping into the scene along with his friend as the two helped to take the gun away from the shooter and subdue him until the cops came.

In a recent conversation with Marc Raimondi of ESPN, “Trailblazer” detailed exactly what went down at the restaurant and how he and Robinson held off the perpetrator with the right use of his ground game.

“I wouldn’t tell the next person to do it unless they’re seriously trained for that type of situation,” said Holland, “Besides doing cage fighting, I train self-defense first and foremost. For me, that was the best way to defend myself at the moment. Plus, I like Batman.”

“I was facing one way and then we heard a big, loud bang,” Holland said. “I thought it was a champagne bottle popping because the people behind us were having a birthday party. I go to look around and I see people running like they had the look of death on [their] face, like super worried.”

The perpetrator has been identified as a 24-year-old man Jesus Samaniego and is facing multiple charges of deadly conduct as well as unlawfully carrying a weapon.

“As soon as he was [asleep], I let go of the choke, slid out on top, got full mount, stretched the arms out so he couldn’t reach for anything,” Holland added.
