For years, Kevin Lee repeatedly mentioned that he saw holes in Khabib Nurmagomedov’s fighting game and now has finally revealed those loopholes he found in the former 155-pound champ’s techniques.
I love breaking down fighters: Kevin Lee
Lee, the lightweight and welterweight contender who recently his super lightweight debut last year at Eagle FC has been vocal about the holes he saw in Khabib, even before he became the dominating UFC Lightweight champion. However, he never revealed what those were back then.
Now, after “The Eagle” reigned on the 155-pound throne and earned distinct wins over the likes of Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, followed by a retirement from the sport for good, Lee has finally stepped forward to lift the curtain on what could have been the secret to defeat the undefeated Dagestani fighter- things that Lee himself would exploit if they ever fought.
“There were a few times where we would’ve fought,” Lee told TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter on facing Khabib in the past. “But, yeah, had I beat Tony, had things been a little different that would have been a massive fight. You’re right, the holes in the game thing kind of got blown out of proportion, it’s kind of hilarious to me, it’s just funny when people do the memes and stuff.”
“I thought that his body was open, I thought that he stood very square,” he went on, “I thought that pressure forward style. Then kind of take it on the chin doesn’t lend well to shots to the body. It would have opened up eventually for a head kick or some type of kick to the head.”
“But, I love fighting so much, I love MMA. I love breaking down fighters and what their attributes are and what they are capable of. It’s not necessarily towards the one man. But it’s interesting, but it’s kind of pointless at the end of the day. He’s gone and it didn’t happen, so there’s no sense in focusing on the past,” Lee added. [H/T BJPenn.com]
