The Russian lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is set to make a comeback on the 24th of October, to defend his belt against Justin Gaethje, and then fight GSP for the last fight of his incredible career. He made his last octagon appearance in September 2019 where he successfully defended his belt against Dustin Poirier maintaining his perfect MMA record of 28-0-0.
His fight against Tony Ferguson, which was scheduled for the 5th time, had gotten canceled due to travel restrictions, because of which Justin Gaethje fought Tony for the interim belt. After knocking out Tony in the 5th round, Justin immediately called out Khabib for the title shot.
Khabib’s father and coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov had been critical in the hospital for a few months, and succumbed to the coronavirus earlier this month. Khabib, being extremely close to his father has been going through a rough patch. There were uncertainties regarding his return to MMA, and most people thought he would never be able to comeback to the octagon with his full potential.
However, Dana White broke it to CNN sports recently that the Khabib vs Justin Gaethje fight was still on, and will happen on 24th October. Khabib has confirmed this news today in Joe Rogan’s comment section on Instagram.

Khabib wants to end his career with GSP
Ali Abdelaziz recently revealed that he had 2 more fights left in his career, and wanted to fight Justin and GSP. Dana White also revealed his interest in making it happen. Khabib confirmed that he is interested in the GSP fight in April of 2021.
We are yet to hear from GSP on this matchup. The former two-division champion recently said in an interview that he thinks Nurmagomedov is the perfect fighter. He did show interest in the fight but did not say anything officially. However, he seems to be hesitant about the idea of a comeback when he revealed that he is uninterested in fighting Kumaru Usman, and does not want to make any hasty decision. If he fights GSP for his last fight, two legendary MMA careers will be over on the same night, regardless of the result.
Apart from GSP, the lightweight has other interesting matchups that could be possible too. Fans have forever been waiting for Khabib vs Tony Ferguson, and that would be a great fight for Khabib to end his career with. There is also a possibility of a rematch with Conor McGregor, to finally settle their beef. Dana White knows that the fight will break all PPV records, and is definitely interested in making that fight happen.
Who do you want to see Khabib go against in his last fight?
