UFC 249 featured an absolute barn burner of a main event as Gaethje took on Tony Ferguson for the interim title. Stepping in as an underdog, Gaethje shocked the world by brutally dominating Ferguson via fifth round TKO to become the UFC interim lightweight champion of the world.

Justin however threw his interim belt the minute it was bestowed upon him. This clearly sent a message that he’s coming for the undisputed belt. The result raised many eyebrows not only due to it’s dominating nature, but also as to how impressive it was. So impressive that it couldn’t even escape the champ Khabib Nurmagomedov’s eyes.

Khabib first took to Twitter with a not so clear tweet. The tweet definitely showed how speechless he was but not in which context. (via Twitter):

Khabib then posted a second tweet appreciating Justin’s performance. He said it was ‘very impressive’ and that the former WSOF champ fought a very smart fight. (via Twitter):

“@Justin_Gaethje it was so impressive, congratulations. Very smart fight.”

Gaethje ‘highlights’ himself for the undisputed belt!

Justin’s performance was impressive on many levels. For starters, he snapped Ferguson’s 12-fight winning streak across 8 years. He became the first fighter inside the octagon to finish Ferguson. Not just that, he defeated Ferguson in his own game. He gave Ferguson a taste of his own medicine by breaking him down as the fight progressed before finishing him. Gaethje also erased any doubts about his cardio and fighting style by prevailing in the fifth round. Except being knocked down in the second round, he dominated every minute of the fight.

Justin will undoubtedly fight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov for the unification bout. The interesting factor being Gaethje’s wrestling pedigree. Gaethje is a decorated NCAA wrestler even though he does not use much of it in his fights. It’ll be interesting to see how his pressure style matches up against phenom grappler Khabib.

Justin will definitely need time to recover from a war like that. Meanwhile Khabib is occupied in celebrating the holy month of Ramazan. Realistically just like last year, September is rumored to be his comeback period.
