Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov even after retiring from the sport several months back, confirms that he will never come back for another fight.
Khabib Nurmagomedov is regarded as the best lightweight in the UFC. He retired with an amazing record of 29-0 which is one of the biggest undefeated streaks in the UFC. Nurmagomedov was scheduled to defend his title against Tony Ferguson on 18 April 2020 at UFC 249. This was the fifth time that a fight between the pair had been scheduled, and both fighters were on 12-fight win streaks in the UFC. But, Nurmagomedov was unable to leave Russia because of restricted air travel due to the pandemic and was later removed from the event.
Ferguson went on to fight Justin Gaethje for the interim UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 249, which was postponed to 9 May. Gaethje won the fight by fifth-round TKO, and ended Ferguson’s 12 fight win streak, and got himself a shot at the title against Nurmagomedov.
Nurmagomedov faced Gaethje in a unification bout on 24 October 2020 in the main event at UFC 254. Nurmagomedov defended his belt ina spectalur fight. Justin Gaethje couldn’t get going the entire fight, he did land some good shots but couldn’t make much out of it. By the end of the first round Khabib had locked an armbar but the time ran out. He took Justin down in the 2nd round and put him to sleep by locking a leg triangle.
In the post-fight interview, Khabib announced his retirement from the sport. He revealed that he had promised his mother that he would not continue to fight without his late father,
“No way I’m going to come here without my father. It was first time after what happened with my father, when UFC called me about Justin, I talk with my mother three days. She doesn’t want me to go fight without my father but I promised her it was going to be my last fight. If I give my word, I have to follow this. It was my last fight here.”
UFC president pursued Khabib for many months and offered him several fights which Khabib refused and then finally Dana gave up and announced in 2021 that Khabib is gone for good.
Recently while speaking to reporters in Russia, Nurmagomedov reaffirmed his decision to walk away from the sport when he did, and he admitted that he doesn’t see himself ever fighting again.
“I have no desire to come back, and I don’t think I ever will,” Nurmagomedov said.
Though many MMA fighter usually announces their retirement in emotions and then later come back, Khabib is the type of guy who might stick to his promise till the end.
