Last week in an amazing five rounds of war, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway moved up in weight class to face top lightweight contender Dustin Poirier at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The fight was the main event at UFC 236.
Dustin Poirier beat Holloway via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) to capture the interim lightweight title. After beating Holloway, the new interim champion made it clear that he wants Khabib Nurmagomedov next.
Although, Khabib Nurmagomedov is currently serving a nine-month suspension for starting a post-fight brawl with McGregor’s teammates at UFC 229 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Dustin Poirier posted on Twitter about a showdown with Khabib Nurmagomedov next.
Gonna be a September to remember!#undisputed

Now the Lightweight champion of the world has responded and doubled down on the interim champion.
“Poirier won a temporary belt. Temporary,” said Khabib. “I have a real one. The only thing that attracts me in this battle is the new belt. It’s pretty. And the rival is a very good one, we cannot underestimate him, he defeated many top fighters. In the UFC they say that I will fight Poirer in a little more than five months. It is difficult to negotiate with me, I am with my principles. I hope the negotiations will go well and in September we will fight.” (H/T – BJPENN)
