With a rivalry that apparently will have no end, Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov have engaged in a new altercation outside the Octagon.

It all started when Khabib, the former UFC Lightweight champion who retired undefeated, made a diss of a statement McGregor during his rise in the UFC. While present at a public speaking in Toronto, ‘The Eagle’ declared that he is happy to see his fellow Russians following their history and making history in MMA.

Islam Makhachev and Usman Nurmagomedov, two of Khabib’s close associates, are the reigning lightweight champions in the UFC and Bellator MMA respectively. Makhachev clinched the UFC title after tapping out Charles Oliveira at UFC 280, while Khabib’s younger cousin Usman earned his crown at Bellator 288 against Patricky Pitbull last Friday.

“Right now, we have the current UFC and Bellator lightweight champions. That is incredible. I heard a long time ago when a guy said that “We are here to take over, but we already took over,” said Khabib.

Khabib’s phrase has a context that dates back to when ‘The Notorious’ started his climb in MMA, just after he TKO’d Diego Brandão in his first main event fight at UFC Fight Night 46 in Dublin in July 2014.

It was expected that Khabib dissing that statement from eight years back was going to ruffle Mystic Mac’s feathers, as he took to Twitter to issue a fiery response, as well as offer a rematch to their UFC 229 scuffle.

“I fight on! Your fathers plan is never complete because you quit and ran, brother. God bless. I’m still here if you wanna go again. But your fear of defeat means you’ve already lost. Run from it all you want. We all lose in the end. Death takes us all. I fear nothing but God” McGregor wrote in a now deleted tweet.

Before they met at UFC 229, the offenses between the two would often cross the lines and the fight ended up getting personal.

McGregor, who was in his top trash-talk persona against Nurmagomedovm attacked the bus carrying the Russian with a handcart months before the fight. Following the attack, one fighter was injured after receiving splinters from the glass that was attacked.

At the weigh-in, the day before the fight was no different. With a lot of tension on both sides, the fighters almost came to blows and had to be separated. In the fight, McGregor failed to impose his strategy and fell victim to the Russian’s solid grappling and ended up tapping out in the fourth.
