The biggest fight in MMA and UFC history between the UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor is almost upon us. However, fans did get a sneak-peek to what their rivalry and animosity might be like at the recently conducted press conference for UFC 229. During the presser, McGregor, who happens to a master at trash-talking and getting people rattled up, got really personal with Khabib and discussed geo-political topics and also questioned him about his relation to a Daegestani dictator. While many people believed that McGregor might have gotten inside Nurmagomedov’s head, the Russian’s head coach javier Mendez has now dismissed such claims.
Mendez recently gave an interview to MMA Fighting. In the interview, he claimed that McGregor’s trash-talk absolutely did not work and it only got Khabib slightly agitated. Here’s what he had to say:
We talked to Khabib right before the fight was made and I said, “Look he is going to play with you. he is going to hit every button. he is going to hit religion, he is going to hit politics. He is going to hit family but you can’t let it affect you because that’s his game. That is what he does and he is a master at that. I wish he wouldn’t do it but that’s who he is. So we have talked about it for months now that this is going to happen. So when it did happen. it was kind a like he was prepared for that.
I told him (Khabib) that if you are not going to fight back then just relax, stay clam and smile. Don’t fight with him. That’s not Khabib’s style. Let’s not go there.
Khabib wasn’t rattled at all. Slightly agitated? Yes. He had to be slightly agitated but it didn’t work. It surely did not work.
