Khamzat Chimaev, the undefeated Chechen middleweight fighter, remains undeterred despite Robert Whittaker’s impressive first-round knockout of Ikram Aliskerov at UFC Saudi Arabia. Whittaker’s dominant performance lasted just under two minutes, but it caught the attention of Chimaev, who had originally been scheduled to face the Australian.

In a surprising display of humility, Chimaev took to social media, congratulating Whittaker on his victory while also reminding him of their unfinished business. He posted on X: “Congratulations @robwhittakermma, we are not done! I wish you a speedy recovery @ikram_aliskerov—keep your head up, brother.”

Whittaker had initially been slated to fight Chimaev, but the Chechen fighter had to withdraw due to a severe illness. Aliskerov stepped in as a replacement, only to suffer a similar fate—a knockout executed with an inside uppercut, reminiscent of Chimaev’s own style.

Robert Whittaker’s UFC Journey

Born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, Whittaker’s martial arts journey began at a young age. His foundation in karate and Hapkido laid the groundwork for his transition to professional MMA.

Whittaker made his professional MMA debut in 2009 in the Australian fighting circuit. His impressive streak of victories caught the attention of UFC scouts, leading to his signing with the organization in 2012.

In the latest edition of UFC Journey, Whittaker prepares for a new opponent, Ikram Aliskerov, who stepped up to face him in the main event in Saudi Arabia. The matchup is set for UFC Fight Night on June 22, 2024.
