Six months after making his last appearance in the octagon, rising UFC star Khamzat Chimaev (9–0) has finally announced to be back in action in June this year, after months of battle against COVID-19.
Following his 17-second knockout win over Gerald Meerschaert at UFC Fight Night: Covington vs. Woodley, Chimaev was supposed to be featured against Leon Edwards at UFC Fight Night 183 in December.
However, in late November, Chimaev’s COVID positive test was made public, followed up with Edwards testing positive for the virus as well, which caused the bout to be postponed and was rescheduled at UFC Fight Night 185 in January.
The Chechnyan fighter once again pulled out from the match, citing COVID recovery and the card was rescheduled once again as the UFC Fight Night 187 main event on 13th March.
Unfortunately, UFC prez Dana White dropped the fight once again, as Chimaev was yet to fully recover from the effects of COVID as his manager Ali Abdelaziz revealed the fighter was still dealing with lung problems due to COVID. Although in January, Chimaev was seen meeting Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.
All that being said, the month of June is what Chimaev is targetting to mark his much-awaited return to the octagon, while also hinting that his next opponent would be none other than welterweight fighter Neil Magny (24–8)
I’m going to give you real Chechen: Khamzat Chimaev challenges Magny on Twitter
It all goes back to UFC on ESPN: Chiesa vs. Magny on 20th January, where Neil Magny was defeated by Michael Chiesa via unanimous decision in Abu Dhabi.
The next day, Khamzat Chimaev retweeted UFC’s post regarding the fight result, congratulating Chiesa while laughing at Magny’s defeat, which had irked the Haitian.
“Make sure you keep that same energy when you see me in person! I’ll give you my word, that I’m slaaping you on sight 👋 and teaching some respect!” the 33-year-old had tweeted on 2nd February.

Weeks after Magny’s reply, Chimaev took to a heated follow-up tweet, challenging “The Haitian Sensation” to prepare for a fight in June.
“Be ready in June i’m going to give you real Chechen inside the cage and outside @danawhite @seanshelby” tweeted Borz.
