UFC newcomer Kris Moutinho has made a name for himself in just one night. From an unknown fighter to fighting at the year’s biggest PPV and then going toe to toe with one of the rising contenders in his division. Kris was appointed to fight UFC’s rising bantamweight star Sean O’Malley at UFC 264. Sean was scheduled to fight Louis Smolka who pulled out just a few days away from the fight. While UFC was busy searching for a quick replacement they got to assign Kris for this fight who was then ready to make his UFC debut.

The duo then fought in the opening fight of the main card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas which was hosting the UFC 264 event headlined by the trilogy fight between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.

The fight was lopsided domination by Sean O’Malley but the world got to see how tough Kris was that night. The fight was stopped at the final moment of the last round of the fight and Sean was declared the winner by TKO.  After the fight, Kris protested the stoppage.

“I definitely think it was stopped too soon, but I’m not going to sit here and bash Herb Dean because he seems like a great guy and a great referee,” Moutinho told MMA Junkie Radio. “I’ve seen him make a lot of great calls, sometimes you make bad ones. I’ve seen guys who look like they’re going to die in that cage and not get stopped. You can watch the Rory MacDonald fight with Robbie Lawler where he went four and a half rounds with his face smashed and a bloody mess and they didn’t stop that fight.”

“There was 30 seconds left, let me go out on my shield. I was still standing, I was still throwing punches, so yeah I’m a little upset.”

After the fight, Moutinho did collect a fight of the night bonus worth $75,000.

Kris Moutinho challenges Aaron Phillips

Prior to his loss to Sean, Kris was coming off two back-to-back wins in his previous organization. He is 9-5 in his MMA career. Though his record doesn’t look that appealing, he did show the world that he is here to fight.

UFC: Aaron Phillips

Aaron Philps was recently riding a five-fight winning streak before his debut fight in the UFC against Jack Shore at bantamweight. The fight was competitive in the first round but Shore got ahead in the second round and caught Aaron in a fully locked-in rear-naked choke and submitted him in the second round. The loss broke Aaron’s two-fight winning streak. The fight will be an interesting matchup as both the fighters will look to get their first win in the UFC.

The UFC Fight Night card will be headlined by the middleweight matchup between Paulo Costa and Marvin Vettori
