UFC Welterweight champion Leon Edwards is looking forward to extending his title reign, and among the potential opponents for his title defenses- he is eager to have a rematch with Nate Diaz, but on one condition- Diaz has to come victorious over Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279.

I would 100 percent give Nate a shot because Nate’s a G: Leon Edwards

UFC 278 last weekend saw one of the biggest shockers in the history of MMA as Edwards head kicked Kamaru Usman to clinch the 170-pound title. Soon after his marvellous feat, ‘Rockey’ got involved in conversations about his next fight- a trilogy against Usman, along with Jorge Masvidal stepping in with an intent to challenge for the title. However, a third option for Edwards is Nate Diaz.

Edwards and Diaz crossed paths at UFC 263 in June last year, with Edwards winning the bout via unanimous decision and earning a shot at Usman’s title. Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Edwards stated that a rematch with the Stockton star is definitely one to think about- but only after Diaz is able to overcome his next hurdle- Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279.

“Imagine the scenes – the scenes!” said Edwards, “Imagine the scenes. I would 100 percent give Nate a shot as well. That would be — the scenes would be crazy. I would 100 percent give Nate a shot because Nate’s a G. I’ve always said it, even after the fight. He is who he is. The game never changed him. So it that does happen, then Nate’s definitely getting the shot.”

“100 percent it will be next year,” the British Jamaican went on, “Obviously, I’ve got a few injuries I need to sort out. Early next year. I don’t want to be off too long, so early next year would be good. March, April. But they’re not going to London until like March, April, right? So around that time, we’re good to go.”

“The stadium. Let’s go! Big stadium. That’s what Dana said. Let’s get it done. MMA now in the U.K. is booming, and to have a champion from the U.K., and all the other guys like Paddy [Pimblett], Darren [Till], put them on the card and let’s sell out Wembley. Now is the time to do it. Let’s do it,” added Edwards. [H/T MMA Fighting]
