Former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold will face former Olympic silver medallist Yoel Romero in a fight for the interim UFC middleweight title. Romero is considered by many fans and pundits alike to be the scariest fighter in the division. That’s partly due to his explosive style of fighting but also because of his daunting physique. While most people are intimidated by the Cuban’s physique, Rockhold feels that it’s Romero’s kryptonite.
Rockhold was previously scheduled to face Robert Whittaker for his undisputed championship. However, Whittaker was forced to pull out due to a staph infection. Hence, Romero has stepped in at a short notice to replace Whittaker in the main-event of UFC 221. Incidentally, Whittaker had defeated Romero to win the title at UFC 213.
Rockhold feels that the former Olympian’s physique is his biggest Achilles heel. He stated that Yoel has a glaring weakness in his game and his body has certain limitations that will be easy to exploit. Here’s what the California native had to say:
“I think Yoel’s body has limitations, I think he has the mindset of a champion. He’ll fight til the end. His mind will tell him to, but his body will break. A body like that can only be built to go so hard for so long.
His explosions will get less and less as the fight goes on, so I have to contain that.
You run risks when you run forward like an idiot. Anytime you come out hard like that, you run the risk of getting dropped.”
Rockhold is spot on in his assessment about Romero’s physique. The amount of muscle that the Cuban has, it will always tire him out quickly.
