Multiple time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gold medalist and undefeated strawweight Mackenzie Dern is back after child birth to take on newcomer Amanda Ribas on October 12.

Dern (7-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has been out of action since May last year. Last time Dern fought, was at UFC 212 in Brazil against boxer Amanda Cooper. Despite of her decorated BJJ background, Dern was able to showcase some of her striking prowess to knock Cooper down before submitting her.

After giving birth to her baby, a daughter, Moa, Dern would like to carry on with that momentum and further establish her case by climbing up the rankings. It seemed difficult as of now, as there was a question mark as to whether UFC would allow her to fight due to health concerns. Those doubts have been erased as the UFC finally decided to give Dern a green signal.

“The UFC was struggling to decide if they would clear me or not because I’m still breast-feeding, they were afraid that I would stop producing milk when I cut weight and affect my daughter, but it’s all good,” Dern told MMA Fighting. “I’ve been cleared by the doctors and the UFC. I’m feeling fine.

Weight has also been an issue for Dern as she missed weight by a massive margin of 7 pounds in her last fight. Dern however clarified that won’t be the case as of now as she has lost a lot of weight post pregnancy due to various factors like breast feeding. Dern claimed she now weighs around 127 compared to being 147 in her last fight, which gives her 7 weeks to cut those 6 pounds.
