Alex Pereira recently accused Magomed Ankalaev of ducking a potential fight, a claim that has sparked significant debate among fans and analysts alike.
Alex Pereira, the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion, recently took to his YouTube channel to address his upcoming fight against Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 307. During the video, Pereira claimed that Ankalaev had turned down an opportunity to fight him for the title. Pereira suggested that Ankalaev’s refusal might be linked to potential visa issues, as the fight is scheduled to take place in the United States.
“I always wanted to fight against Ankalaev,” Pereira said. “I made it clear to the UFC, but Ankalaev didn’t want to fight me. I don’t know the reason, if it was the location or if he just didn’t want to. He isn’t the champion, he can’t pick anything”.
Magomed Ankalaev’s Response to Alex Pereira
Magomed Ankalaev, known for his grappling prowess and formidable striking, was quick to respond to Alex Pereira’s allegations. Taking to social media, Ankalaev refuted the claims, stating, “This is the biggest lie. This is not man style”. Ankalaev emphasized that he is not avoiding a fight with Pereira and is focused on his upcoming bout against Aleksandar Rakic at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi.
Ankalaev’s camp has also dismissed the visa issue rumors, asserting that the Dagestani fighter is ready and willing to compete anywhere, including the United States. Ankalaev’s manager added that the decision to fight Rakic was made by the UFC, not by Ankalaev himself.
The tension between Ankalaev and Pereira highlights the complexities of matchmaking in the UFC. While fans eagerly anticipate a showdown between the two top contenders, logistical and promotional considerations often play a significant role in determining fight schedules. Pereira’s upcoming fight against Rountree has also raised eyebrows, with some former champions questioning the decision to grant Rountree a title shot over Ankalaev.
