Throughout his 26-year-long decorated boxing career, Manny Pacquiao has knocked out many who have squared off against him inside the squared circle. Now, having bid the gloves, the Filipino has a new fight in mind- to punch corruption in the face as he makes a run for the Presidential spot.

Nicknamed ‘PacMan’, Pacquiao is the only octuple boxing champion ever, with a total of twelve titles across the eight different divisions, another record that still stands. He is also the first boxer to win titles in four of the eight ‘glamour divisions’: flyweight, featherweight, lightweight and welterweight and is also the first five-division lineal champion.

I’m against corruption. Corruption is the cancer of this country: Manny Pacquiao

Serving as a Senator of the Philippines since 2016, Pacquiao decided to quit boxing after losing to Yordenis Ugás on 21st August, and on the heels of his retirement, Pacquiao aimed for the toughest fight of his life- to run for President.

Having risen from poverty himself, Pacquiao is a well-known philanthropist who has dedicated himself to the welfare of his people and promises to keep that mission continuing forward. On top of that, the 42-year-old wants to knock corruption out of politics.

“I’m serving the people, not my friends. So if you have an issue of corruption I will send you to jail,” Pacquiao said in an interview with Vice, “I’ve been helping people since 2002 until now and there are so many people suffering and starving. What I saw in the government is these politicians, most of them are corrupt. They’re stealing money from the government, stealing money from the people.”

“I think the difference is my sincerity—my love for the Filipino people, my love for my country,” he went on, “I criticize the president because I’m against corruption. Corruption is the cancer of this country.”

“The people around him—there’s a lot of issues. That’s why we are trying to investigate all those issues of corruption,” added Pacquiao.
