Marif Piraev, a mixed martial artist who hails from Dagestan, Russia has reportedly escaped the country after he was drafted to join the country’s military in the invasion of Ukraine, according to his colleague Shamil Galimov.
Marif Piraev “fled Russia in horror” says colleague
Galimov said that a couple of days ago, Marif Piraev, nicknamed “Piranha”, had received a summons from the military registration and enlistment office in connection with partial mobilization. Galimov added that the Piraev, who is a former AMC Fight Nights champion, left Russia due to the fact that he was called to the draft board on the agenda.
“Marif received a summons, he fled Russia in horror,” Galimov said during a live broadcast of a Q & A session on Instagram, which was later reposted on YouTube. Check out the clip below-
The 29-year-old, who was slated to fight Shovkhal Churchayev at a joint event between Hype Fighting Championships and GFC, has fled across Russia’s border with Georgia, as stated by Galimov. At the moment, there are no refutations of this information on Piraev’s social networks, and an unknown woman who answers the calls made to his phone number, refuses to comment on the situation.
“I take a summons and go to the military registration and enlistment office, and there, as the Motherland decides,” said Mineev, who lost his brother in Russia’s war in Ukraine. [H/T Bloody Elbow]
A “partial mobilization” in Russia was announced by Russian president Vladimir Putin on Sep. 21, marking the first mobilization in the country since the Second World War. A few days later, Sergei Shoigu, the defense minister, announced the country would draft 300,000 Russians “with military experience.”
There are, however, protests taking place across Russia which suggest that the Kremlin is drafting far more troops than the number claimed by the defense minister. Dagestan, where Piraev was born, was among the regions protesting the mobilization order, resulting in clashes with police. There is a video showing Dagestani women running after a police officer.
