Mark Coleman, the inaugural UFC Heavyweight Champion and a true legend in the world of mixed martial arts, is currently in critical condition after a heroic act that saved his parents’ lives.

Mark Coleman’s Heroic Rescue

In the early hours of Tuesday, a devastating fire broke out in Mark Coleman’s childhood home. The flames quickly engulfed the house, trapping his elderly parents and their pet dog inside. Without hesitation, Coleman rushed into the burning building, risking his own life to save both of his parents.

After coming out with his mother and father, the former fighter went in for a third time to rescue their pet dog Hammer, named after his own nickname- an effort which cost Coleman dearly. The fire left him with severe burns and smoke inhalation.

As per a report from MMA Fighting, a total of seven different fire departments had rushed to the scene soon after the report of the fire breakout was made, although the reason for the accident is yet to be known. The emergency responders, although arrived just in time to pull him from the flames, but the damage was done. Coleman is now fighting for his life in the hospital.

“I’m a very firm believer in the power of prayer,” former UFC fighter Wes Sims, who is a longtime friend of Coleman, took to facebook to share an update about him on Facebook. “I sent family and some friends a few pictures of Mark Coleman’s current condition. I know Mark, if he could talk he’d say ‘film this s***, Wes, we are going viral!’”

“Mark’s parents’ house burnt down last night. Mark saved both [his parents] and went back for Hammer, his dog. He was life flighted to Toledo and is currently intubated and sedated. I swear to God he’s one of the toughest individuals ever created, been through so much a movie at this point could not give his life’s work justice!” Sims added.

Several photos of the horrific accident was made public by MMA writer Jonathan Snowden, who revealed the unfortunate news that Coleman was unable to save his dog, who had woke him up when the fire broke out.

The MMA Community Reacts

News of Coleman’s heroism and critical condition spread quickly throughout the MMA community as they took to social media to send their thoughts and prayers to the UFC legend.

“Once a fighter always a fighter” wrote a fan.

Another added, “Our prayers are attributed to him”

“It’s heartbreaking to hear he’s in critical condition. Sending prayers for his recovery” one fan commented.

Mark Coleman is no stranger to danger. As one of the pioneers of the UFC, he helped shape the sport into what it is today. His wrestling background and brute strength made him a force to be reckoned with inside the octagon. Coleman’s relentless fighting style earned him the nickname “The Hammer,” and he became the first-ever UFC Heavyweight Champion in 1997 when he defeated Dan Severn at UFC 12.
