Max Holloway is keen to make a jump up to lightweight after he faces longtime rival and reigning UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski in their upcoming trilogy fight at UFC 276.

Holloway is 0-2 down against Volkanovski, who became the new 145-pound champion after defeating “Blessed” in their first encounter back at UFC 245 in December 2019 and defended his title in the rematch at UFC 251 in July 2020.

Last month, Volkanovski expressed his wish to make a move to lightweight after the Holloway trilogy, specifically aiming for a showdown with Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira, targeting the two division champion status. Remarkably, Holloway revealed that he has a similar target.

There’s interesting fights up there: Max Holloway

Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, the Hawaiian MMA icon stated that while his current focus is on the trilogy, he does believe there are interesting fights at Lightweight and his target is also on Oliveira.

“We’re here for a reason. If it was so guaranteed already, we wouldn’t have been here. So I can’t wait. I can’t wait to go show. A lot of history on the line, a lot of legacy on the line, 0-0 Max is going in there looking for a finish. So I can’t wait. I’ll fight this fight just like how I fought every other fight — like it’s my first and it might be my last. So I’ve been in there 10 rounds with the guy. I feel good, I feel confident, and I’ve been saying we’ll be lucky if we get past three in this one,” said Holloway.

“We’ll see what happens [on a move to lightweight]. Never say never, right? There’s interesting fights up there, especially with [Charles] Oliveira leading the pack and stuff. So we’ll see what happens. I can’t wait. First things first, it’s Alex, July 2. Let’s bring back balance to the world,” the former champion added. [H/T MMA Fighting]
