Former UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway feels the world might have seen the last of Conor McGregor in the Octagon already, as he believes the Irishman is not coming back to the sport.
He never once said he’d come back. And rightfully so, he shouldn’t: Max Holloway
Despite not getting wins or being out of action, Conor McGregor is still a name that is always on everyone’s minds. The former two division champion might have lost three out of his last four fights and is also nearly a year away from the Octagon, but remains the most famous figure in MMA.
Having recovered from the broken tibia in the trilogy against Dustin Poirier at 264, followed by a crazy bulking up, many fans are highly anticipating the return of “The Notorious” this year.
However, Max Holloway is not buying into the hype of Mystic Mac’s potential comeback, stating how McGregor never actually committed to making a return and also claims that he “rightfully” shouldn’t.
“With all this Conor talk and saying whatever, he never committed to coming back. He never once said he’d come back. And rightfully so, he shouldn’t,” Holloway told ESPN, “Conor is what everyone wants to be. Everyone wants to get in this fight game, make the money, and then save your chickens. I wouldn’t even blame him if he didn’t want to come back. If you want to come back, that’s his competitive side straight doing it. … We’ll see what happens. All respect to him.”
Holloway, in the meantime, is gearing up for a trilogy fight against the reigning featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 276 on 2nd July. Volkanovski, who dethroned Holloway from his 145-pound title at UFC 245, made it 2-0 via a controversial split decision victory in the rematch at UFC 251.
Nonetheless, “Blessed” says if McGregor does return to the sport, he is on the shortlist to take him on. “That Conor fight, I tell you all the time, we’re on the shortlist for that. But first thing is first: We’ve got (Volkanovski). We’ll see,” Holloway added. [H/T MMA Junkie]
