Max Holloway is ready to serve as a backup fighter at UFC 257

Max Holloway, Calvin Kattar

Max Holloway, the former UFC featherweight champion and the most decorated 145-pound fighter of all time after his best performance of his career last weekend against Calvin Kattar said that he is even ready to step up at UFC 257 if any fighter falls out.

Holloway dominated Kattar via unanimous decision (50-43, 50-43, 50-42) at UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in one of the most one-sided main events in UFC history.

The fight Saturday might have been the best performance of his career, one that could put him in line for another title opportunity. UFC president Dana White said he believes Holloway “deserves” another shot at current featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, to whom Holloway has lost two close fights. But Holloway will have to wait: Volkanovski’s next fight will come against Brian Ortega on March 27 at UFC 260.

During his post-fight interview (shown below), the former UFC featherweight champion offered up his services for UFC 257, which goes down next weekend on ESPN+ PPV and features a lightweight main event between top contenders Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. “Blessed” has fought and lost to both fighters before but is still willing to stick around on “Fight Island” in case somebody falls out over the next week.

“Hey, Dana. That’s 50k. Don’t worry Kattar we got 50k, baby, that’s what up. First of all, thank you Abu Dhabi. You guys keeping us safe. Thank you fans for coming back. All I gotta say is there’s a big, big fight next week — Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor. And guess what? Your boy’s staying all this week,” Holloway said. “If anything happens in this sport, somebody drops off, Dana knows my number and can hit me up.  Make sure you guys tune in for the PPV next week baby, it’s gonna be huge, and we’re gonna have some prizes baby. Let’s go.”

UFC 257 takes place Saturday, January 23 from Fight Island, and the main event will be a showcase between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. Both of the main event combatants hold a victory over Max, and he would love a chance to step in and fight either of them as legacy fights, even though the fight is scheduled only one week after his victory over Calvin Kattar last night.

Holloway, who turned 29 last month, arguably locked up another crack at the 145-pound title after current champion Alexander Volkanovski meets Brian Ortega in March. But if something were to happen to McGregor or Poirier, as well as UFC 257’s co-main event between Dan Hooker and Michael Chandler, Holloway would be a phenomenal option to fill in.
