Conor Mcgregor commented on Khabib Nurmagomedov, accusing the UFC lightweight champion of not making weight for his retirement fight with Justin Gaethje at UFC 254.
Conor McGregor is not alone in questioning Khabib Nurmagomedov’s weigh-in for his final UFC outing. Several eyebrows were raised by fighters and weight cut experts after Khabib Nurmagomedov hit the scales for his lightweight title defense against Justin Gaethje last October.
How the scales were checked, coupled with the reaction of Nurmagomedov, led to speculation that the process had been manipulated to ensure that the main event of UFC 254 went off without a hitch and Conor McGregor certainly spotted something suspicious at the weigh-ins.
Conor Mcgregor on Khabib’s Weigh-in issue
Speaking to Oscar Willis of The Mac Life, McGregor said that he felt Khabib did not make weight at UFC 254.
“He’s looking like a little, fat elephant at the minute,” McGregor said of Nurmagomedov during an interview with The Mac Life. “He’s enjoying himself. “I don’t think he made weight the last time out here, to be honest. I was very skeptical of seeing him on the scales – very, very unusual behavior. But it is what it is.”
Conor also made a statement regarding his retirement
“How you could walk away at this stage is baffling to me but each to their own,” McGregor told The Mac Life when speaking about Nurmagomedov’s decision to call it a career. “There are so many amazing fights out there. Even the carry-on around the Tony [Ferguson] situation, like I don’t care about anything. You’re scheduled to fight a man. No matter what. Fights must take place. You can’t just scurry away from bouts.
“It’s been the hallmark of his approach. I was not surprised to see him walk away or scurry away, I should say. It is what it is. We carry on.”
Conor and Khbaib fought in 2018, in the main event of UFC 229, which went down as the highest-selling pay-per-view in the company’s history. Nurmagomedov won that fight by fourth-round submission, dashing McGregor’s dreams of reclaiming the UFC lightweight title.
McGregor has made no secret of his desire to secure a rematch with Nurmagomedov after the pair shared the Octagon in a 2018 title fight overflowing with bad blood. Nurmagomedov will be present in Abu Dhabi at the same time as McGregor, with the undefeated Russian set to hold talks with UFC President Dana White regarding a potential U-turn on his retirement.
Former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor and former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier will clash with each other in a rematch at UFC 257 pay-per-view card on Jan 23. This fight could have serious title implications as UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has retired from the sport and the belt will soon be vacant and the winner of the UFC 257 main event could very well fight for the vacant title.
