Conor McGregor has made some comments regarding his compatriot and boxing superstar Katie Taylor’s maiden professional career loss to Chantelle Cameron in Dublin last Saturday night, opining that he believes the fight could have ended in a draw.

Head up, you’re the champion: McGregor encourages Katie Taylor

Taylor and Cameron locked horns at the 3Arena in Dublin this 20th of May with Cameron’s undisputed light welterweight belts at stake. Even though “KT” was the favourite going into the bout, the Irishwoman suffered a major upset at Cameron secured a majority decision victory to retain her belts.

In attendance to cheer for Taylor ringside, Conor McGregor stated after the fight that it was very close and while the judges’ verdict favoured “Il Capo”, he saw the fight ending in a draw.

“It was a great fight, close fight. I had it a draw,” said the former UFC double champion. “She was scheduled for one different style of opponent, at a specific weight. That fell through. So, last minute, what does Katie do, the warrior that’s in her? ‘Give me something I can aspire to. I want to go up in weight, I wanna fight the champion in the heavier weight at the drop of a hat.’ Give her a chance, do it in Croke Park.”

“Head up, you’re the champion,” McGregor added. “You’re the Olympic champion and you’re the world champion, still. Still, in your division.” [H/T MMA Knockout]

While she’s not undefeated anymore, Taylor is still undisputed at lightweight and is insisting on activating her rematch clause to have a second encounter with Cameron, which she wants on her home soil as well.

“Congratulations to Chantelle on a fantastic performance. Thank you for the opportunity to fight for your belts. I look forward to the rematch,” said Taylor in the post fight interview. “It was obviously a very, very close fight. It’s not how I wanted my homecoming to go. But I’m so grateful for the support regardless.”

“It was a tough bout, a grueling ten rounds like I expected it to be. I guess I just came up short tonight. I look forward to next time facing her,” she added. [H/T Boxingscene.com]
