In the dynamic world of mixed martial arts, title shots are highly coveted and often hotly debated. Recently, Merab Dvalishvili, the top-ranked bantamweight contender, has stirred the pot by declaring that Umar Nurmagomedov is undeserving of a title shot. Instead, Dvalishvili believes that Deiveson Figueiredo is the rightful contender for the bantamweight championship.
Merab Dvalishvili’s Argument
Merab Dvalishvili, who is set to challenge Sean O’Malley for the bantamweight title at UFC 306, has been vocal about his views on the title contention landscape. In a recent interview, Dvalishvili expressed his belief that Umar Nurmagomedov, despite his impressive record, has not faced enough top-tier opponents to warrant a title shot. He pointed out that Nurmagomedov’s only significant victory in the top 15 was against Cory Sandhagen.
“I don’t think he deserves to fight for the belt. That’s my opinion. That’s my true answer,” Dvalishvili stated. He further elaborated that Nurmagomedov’s rise in the rankings has been facilitated by his association with his cousin, UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Dvalishvili argues that Deiveson Figueiredo, a former flyweight champion, has a stronger case for a title shot. Since moving up to the bantamweight division, Figueiredo has been on a tear, defeating notable opponents including Rob Font and former champion Cody Garbrandt. Merab Dvalishvili emphasized that Figueiredo’s track record and name recognition make him a more deserving contender.
“Figueiredo deserves to fight for the belt because he beat three tough guys. He finished Cody Garbrandt, and he dominated Chito Vera. He has a big name and he called my name respectfully,” Merab Dvalishvili explained.
Merab Dvalishvili says Umar Nurmagomedov is only being pushed because he's Khabib's cousin and didn't earn his way to the top.
"It's like cheating a little bit to get here. I have 12 fights in the UFC, I beat like 7 or 8 ranked fighters."

As the bantamweight division continues to heat up, the debate over who deserves the next title shot is far from settled. While Umar Nurmagomedov remains a formidable contender with an undefeated record, Dvalishvili’s arguments highlight the complexities of ranking and title contention in the UFC.
With UFC 306 on the horizon, all eyes will be on the outcome of the bout between Dvalishvili and O’Malley. The winner will not only claim the bantamweight throne but also potentially set the stage for the next challenger, be it Nurmagomedov or Figueiredo.
