Former UFC Middleweight champion Michael Bisping has actively spoken against the advice Mike Tyson recently gave to Conor McGregor, stating that the it would be “risky” for the former double champ to follow the boxing legend’s words.

McGregor (22-6) has now gone more than two years without a victory, and both of his last two outings in the Octagon were losses against Dustin Poirier, the second one dating back to UFC 264 in July last year in which McGregor ended up with a broken tibia. Now out of recovery, the Irishman has been aiming at a comeback, with big names such as Nate Diaz, and Micheal Chandler speculated to be his next opponent.

Recently on  “The Fight Card” podcast, Mike Tyson spoke to Henry Cejudo about what should be the next move for “The Notorious”, stating that McGregor should pick up atleast three wins before going after elite competition to help build his confidence.

“After a defeat, you should do a couple of fights to get your feet wet. Conor McGregor, I think you should build your confidence up and go do what you do: win excitingly,” said Tyson, “No big-time guy, let him get three fights and build his confidence back up. Every fight the opponent goes to a higher level.”

There’s no guarantees in the fight game: Michael Bisping doesn’t believe McGregor should face someone low ranked

Michael Bisping, however, countered the advice from Tyson, citing it to be a “risky” move for McGregor, stating that if he suffers a shock defeat against someone who isn’t an elite that would be more damaging to McGregor’s reputation, compared to losing against a top fighter.

“The circumstances with McGregor right now, it’s a risky one. Tyson said have two or three fights before you go into a big fight like that. There’s risk and there is reward. There’s no guarantees in the fight game and if he loses to them (someone outside of the top five), then it’s even worse if he was to go in against the champ, Charles Oliveira. (If) you go up against the champ Charles Oliveira (first), you get beat, oh well, so what? No big deal. Everybody’s losing to him right now. Charles Oliveira is the man,” said Bisping, “However, if (Conor McGregor) loses to someone ranked down the pecking order, ranked six, seven, something like that, now it’s a very different conversation that’s taking place.” [H/T BJPenn.com]
