UFC Lightweight contender and former Bellator MMA Lightweight champion Michael Chandler is calling for an encounter with Islam Makhachev for the vacant 155-pound title and wants Charles Oliveira to wait for Conor McGregor.
On his second appearance in the Octagon, Chandler landed a title fight against Oliveira at UFC 262 for the lightweight title which was vacated by Khabib. Oliveira clinched the belt via a 2nd round TKO victory over Chandler, but had to vacate the title after missing weight before facing Justin Gaethje at UFC 274.
After “Do Bronx” defeated Gaethje, UFC prez Dana White stated that the Brazilian would be the number one contender for the vacant title, and Oliveira recently named Conor McGregor to be the one facing him for the belt.
Michael Chandler tells Oliveira to “sit out” for McGregor
In the meantime, Chandler opines that Oliveira can wait all he want for “The Notorious” to come back, he will take on Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title and “keep the division warm”.
“Hey, Charles, do your thing, bro. Wait till Conor comes back, do your thing, you deserve it. On a couple fight win streak, smashing through everybody,” Chandler said in a clip posted on his Instagram story.
“Why don’t you sit out? Wait for Conor to come back, I’ll keep the division warm, I’ll keep the division going. I’ll fight Islam next, I’ll fight Islam next for the title. And then whenever you get your so-called superfight, do your thing, get it out of your system, then you can come back to our division. See you at the top,” Chandler added. [H/T BJPenn.com]
Oliveira, however, revealed to Ag. Fight that he also wishes to take on Makhachev in an attempt to get Khabib out of retirement and will lay aside McGregor.
“Look, forget about Conor McGregor now. Forget it. In Brazil, Charles Oliveira against Islam Makhachev. Is this the fight you want? So we will have it. Charles Oliveira against Islam Makhachev in Brazil,” Oliveira. [H/T MMA Junkie]
