Michael Chandler remains steadfast in his belief that Conor McGregor will eventually return to the Octagon to face him and avoid staining his legacy in the sport.
I do believe I fight Conor within the next six months: Michael Chandler
Chandler and McGregor are currently the opposing coaches at TUF 31, which us currently airing every Tuesday until the 15th of August. In the meantime, many want to see the rivalry between the two now TUF coaches be carried forward into the cage- and both fighters also have shown interest in facing each other.
However, while Chandler had two fights last year, there are many ifs and buts speculating about the Irishman.
The former double champ has been out of action since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier in their trilogy at UFC 264 in July 2021- two years back when he last fought in the Octagon.
Aside from the recovery from the fracture, McGregor’s return has also been undetermined due to him not entering the USADA testing pool yet, aside from the controversial incidents- most recently the sexual assault allegations on a woman in the men’s restroom during the fourth game of the NBA Finals. Amidst all these, there are rumors that “The Notorious” might never actually return to the fight game again.
However, Michael Chandler begs to differ.
“I think Conor’s coming back. I don’t think he wants to stain his legacy by leading us all down this road of, ‘I’m doing the Ultimate Fighter, I’m fighting Michael Chandler – Oh, by the way, never mind. I’m not coming back,’” Chandler told Daniel Cormier on YouTube. “Supposedly there was a countdown with USADA, six months, and all that other stuff. That’s not for me to choose or decide. Have there been exemptions before? People are talking about exemptions. Of course, that’s all on the table.”
Aside from believing that McGregor will return and fight him, “Iron” is also confident that when the two share the Octagon, it will be him who will secure a knockout victory over Mystic Mac within the first two rounds.
“All I know is I’m controlling the controllable, and either way, I’m gonna keep on moving forward, and I do believe I fight Conor within the next six months, and it’s going to be one of the biggest pay-per-views that we have ever seen, and I’m gonna go out there and knock him out within the first two rounds,” he added.
