Michael Chandler always knew how to hype up the fights, but the former Bellator stalwart was only waiting to get into the UFC to show his skills with the mic.

“Iron” is four fights into his ongoing stint with the UFC, but the former Bellator Lightweight champion arguably marked his best moment in the Octagon at UFC 274 last weekend. Added with the vicious front kick KO of Tony Ferguson, Chandler showed impressive promo skills on the mic with his adrenaline-rushing callout of Conor McGregor. It was certainly one of the best moments of the event, with Chandler stating he is ready to up the stakes and is ready to take on the former double champ at 170.

It’s really hard to cut a promo…when you’re not fighting the best fighters in the world: Michael Chandler

McGregor’s UFC comeback is one of the most anticipated fights that fight fans are waiting for, and with Chandler being one of the most popular fighters on the current UFC roster, the fight will no doubt become one of the biggest of this year. And with Chandler expecting to go neck to neck against one of the best trash-talkers in the scene, the fight will even be more exciting.

However, speaking on The MMA Hour, Chandler revealed that the mic skills he showed after UFC 274, was always there even when he was competing as one of the front faces in Bellator, but he didn’t cut promos like this back then because that promotion didn’t have the best fighters in the world.

“I wasn’t legitimately putting myself in the position to be the No. 1 fighter in the world, therefore, I didn’t want to show my complete skill set. It’s hard because I don’t want to ever speak about Bellator, or where I was previously, in a non-positive light. I love Bellator, I love Scott Coker, I loved that I came up in that organization. But it’s really hard to cut a promo like that and talk about becoming the best fighter in the world when you’re not fighting the best fighters in the world,” said Chandler, “Sorry, Bellator does not have the best fighters in the world. There might be one or two outliers within that organization, but it’s just the truth.”

“I got a text on my phone from Scott Coker right now, he and I still speak and we are as close as they come,” the 36-year-old went on, “I’m very thankful for my history in the organization, but it’s really hard to get on a microphone and tell people I’m the most entertaining fighter in the world when I’m not fighting in the premier organization. We can all admit — and if you don’t admit, you’re either a hater or you don’t know the sport — that the UFC is the premier organization. The fighters in the UFC are the premier fighters on the planet.”

“That’s where it’s come from, that’s where I realized that all of the eyeballs, all the lights, all the cameras are on me, because I’m fighting at the highest level and that’s where you break out the extra wrinkles in your game,” added Chandler. [H/T MMA Fighting]
