A Bellator super-fight between Michael Chandler vs. Patricio Freire is set for Bellator 221 on May 11 to take place at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. Bellator is supposed to make the announcement later this week.
Featherweight champion Freire is set to move up in weight class to face Chandler who will be keeping his lightweight title on the line. The fight was first reported by Ariel Helwani of ESPN.
Champ vs. Champ fights have been more frequent in recent times and big promotions including UFC and Bellator are consistently giving fans these type of match-ups. Most recently Bellator light heavyweight champ Ryan Bader defeated Fedor Emelianenko to become the promotion’s first double champ and before that Rory McDonald moved up in weight class to fight Mousasi but was thoroughly beaten.
Both Chandler and Freire have traded words back and forth in recent times and Chandler has beaten Patricio’s elder brother Patricky Freire back in 2016 for the vacant lightweight title.
Chandler last fought against Brent Primus at Bellator 212 where he beat him via a unanimous decision. The fight was a rematch from Bellator 180 when Primus beat Chandler.
Meanwhile, Patricio is coming off of a successful title defence against Emmanuel Sanchez back in November.
