Many a times a fighter’s battles doesn’t simply end or begin in the Octagon. A similar situation has arrived in Latvian-Canadian UFC light heavyweight fighter Misha  Cirkunov’s life. As Misha’s gears up to face Johnny Walker this coming Saturday, he will have his brain riddled by the fact that his wife Brittany Churchill has been diagnosed with cancer.

“It’s crazy. It just shows these days it doesn’t matter who you are, how well you eat, anyone can get it.” Cirkunov told MMA News. “I was doing a lot of research and reading. Apparently more than 50% of Canadians will eventually will have it, which is a crazy number. I don’t think people are as aware of it. I think there should be more awareness. People should pay attention a little bit more about towards their diet.”

I don’t know if it’s my newly shaved head or how strong I feel but I’m ready to battle for my life in 2019 💪🏼 I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer early October and recently got a new diagnosis that it has spread to one lymph node. Originally I was planning to just do radiation but when it starts to travel in the body they recommend chemo. I will get another diagnosis Wednesday & start chemo on Thursday. I just want people to know I’m here to share my information and learn more about this so we can help find a cure and show people we can conquer our biggest fears. Cancer is a scary word and for me Chemo is even worse but I don’t want to be afraid I want to use this new perspective to grow wiser and appreciate every experience I’m given while I get to be alive. I would like to remind people that your health is everything! Get your breast exams and do them yourself too. I found my tiny little lump the day after my Dr did my breast exam and sent me home with a clean bill of health. You know your body the best just listen to it be in tune and make time to care for and nourish yourself! I’ll be sharing all my health tips and exercises along the way please feel free to ask me anything, share your stories, and most of all show your support it’s the best part of all of this! 💕 A special thank you to my friends & hair team @ikonsalon the place I can always be myself and look and feel amazing 🥰 #BreastCancerAwareness #StandUpToBreastCancer #YoungBreastCancer #BaldAndBeautiful #BrittChurchill

After inking a new six fight deal with the UFC, Cirkunov wasn’t in the great of phase after losing back to back fights against Volkan Oezdemir and Glover Teixeira. However, he did turn the tide in his last bout against Patrick Cummins last October.

“She’s doing really well, mentally she’s in good spirits. In the beginning it was really difficult because once you hear that kind of news, you realize you’re not just in a fight in competition against another human, but you’re in a fight for your life. But ever since she went public, I feel like there’s been such a strong support from our friends and family. I feel like those people give us so much more energy and power to go and deal through this hard time. [This news] just makes you more mature. Where before it’s just another day. You realize life is short, if you think about it. You just try to take the best out of everything and stay positive. Don’t pay attention to anything negative. It just really matures you a lot, you start appreciating little things.”

Cirkunov (14-4) was initially set to face Ovince Saint-Preux this Saturday before an injury forced “OSP” off the card. Instead, the Canadian fighter will take on rising Brazilian prospect Walker in his place.

“I wish I kind of knew about [the switch up] a little sooner. I only found out about it eight days ago. I kind of like a bit of short notice, it would have been nice to have a bit more time to adjust to Johnny Walker. Just because he’s very unpredictable and his style is kind of all over the place. Having said that, he’s very dangerous. But I’ve been training very hard. I was preparing myself physically and mentally. I’m in a good place. It’s most likely going to be fireworks. We’re going to go at each other. He’s fast, he likes to move, and he likes to go forward. It’s going to be fireworks, I highly doubt it’s going to be a decision.”

UFC 235 is scheduled to take place on March 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones will defend his title against Anthony “Lionheart” Smith in the main event.
