Abdul Muneer is set to make his MMA return at Brave 20

Muneer, who boasts a professional record of 6-3 in his career, is currently sitting on a two-fight losing streak. His last fight came against Gurdarshan Mangat at Brave 5. It went down in the history books as one of the most heated rivalries in Indian MMA and Mangat had emerged victorious via decision.

The Cutman was out of action for more than a year after this and will finally step back into the cage against Al Qaisi.

Al Qaisi, meanwhile, has a completely contrasting situation. He is 5-3 in his career and has a two-fight winning streak at the moment. He is known for his grappling prowess with four out of his five wins coming via submission.

Ahead of this huge showdown, we managed to catch up with Muneer for an exclusive interview. He talked about his preparations for the fight. You can read the highlights below.

His opponent:

“Al Qaisi basically has a wrestling-grappling background so a good portion of my training will be revolving around the same. I had watched almost all of his fights. He used Guillotine Choke to finish three of his opponents. This means that he is physically strong as it is not easy to finish someone with Guillotine if you don’t have the strength,”

Collaborating with Kantharaj Agasa and training abroad:

“I will be training with Kantharaj Agasa and a few other fighters in Bangalore. I’m training with Mohammed Farhad as well but he is still recovering from the injury he picked up in his last fight. Going to Thailand for a three-week training is an option that I’m considering at the moment. Training at KHK MMA is another option on the table”

Why the fight is important to him:

“Both of my previous fights in Brave have been a bit unlucky. My first fight in the promotion against Massio Fullen had early-stoppage controversies. As for my second fight, six-days prior to it, I had picked up a leg injury. I did not want to pull-out from the fight as it was one of the biggest fights on the card and also I didn’t want to disappoint the fans. There is a need to come back strongly and this is why the fight with Al Qaisi will be important for me.”

His strategies going into the fight:

“I’ve been working on my ground defence as my opponent comes from a wrestling background. But at the same time, I’m not interested in going into war with my opponent in the ground. Because I know that my advantage is in stand-up while my opponent’s advantage is in the ground-game. At the same time, it doesn’t mean I will be leaving holes in my ground defence. It will be a clash of styles and I will be looking to put all my advantages to use. I’m expecting a knockout within second round. If the KO does not happen and it goes to the third round, then I might go into defensive mode. Nevertheless, I’m still in the process of studying my opponent and these strategies might change as I move forward”
