MMA India Exclusive: Roshan Mainam Luwang opens up about becoming the first Indian fighter to be part of EVOLVE MMA - Roshan Mainam
Roshan Mainam will be the first Indian fighter in the EVOLVE MMA Fight Team

Upcoming Indian MMA star Roshan Mainam Luwang has been selected to be part of the EVOLVE MMA Fight team which was founded by ONE championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong. The Evolve team had held try outs back in November which attracted hundreds of application. From this, only six fighters were selected to be part of the EVOLVE Fight team including Roshan.

The 22-year-old, along with his coach Vishal Seigell, sat with the MMA India Show for an exclusive interview recently where Roshan talked about the early days of his career.

“I’m from the North East, Manipur to be exact. I started wrestling back in 2005 and then moved to Delhi in 2010 and continued wrestling throughout this time frame. After a few years, I met my coach as well. After turning my complete attention to MMA, I fought in some promotions based out of North East and also fought in the SFL,” Roshan noted.

Roshan fought four times in the SFL and secured two wins. His last fight with Kantharaj Agasa was something that caught the attention of the Indian MMA fans as both the fighters were equally matched. Agasa went on to win the match via a decision but Roshan’s performance had gained him praise from everyone.

“Everyone knows how good Kantharaj is. He is a great and experienced fighter. I could’ve fought a different fighter to make up my record but that doesn’t give me anything. So, fighting someone like Kantharaj will only benefit me. At the same time, I didn’t have the fear in my heart, I was just looking for ways to win,” he added.

Super Fight League and Roshan’s rivalry with Kantharaj is in the history books for the time being as he will be training at EVOLVE MMA from next month. Roshan will have the opportunity to train with some of the biggest names in the business including Rafael Dos Anjos, Angela Lee, Eddie Alvarez and Demetrious Johnson among others.

“I’ll have to train at EVOLVE Gym in Singapore. I will be able to train with some of the best fighters from the world. I will have to shift to there from next month. I was one of the fighters that was selected from hundreds of fighters that applied from around the world and I will only be focussing on my training when I’m there,” he added.

Roshan’s coach Vishal Seigell, meanwhile, is pretty confident about his student.

“He is super focused and ready to go. There is nothing better than getting exposed to some of the best talents in the world. There are so many great athletes there. Roshan knows what lies ahead for him. Right now, there is nothing on his plate other than being super focused on training and trying to attain levels. We are very humbled and grateful for the opportunity we got. And I’m very confident on his ability to stick to the plan and work hard,” Vishal noted.

The duo also thanked all the people, fighters and coaches involved in Roshan’s journey so far.
