MMA India – National Sports Federation is now the only recognised MMA governing body in India by the IMAAF.
Prior to this recognition of MMA India – National Sports Federation, All India Mixed Martial Arts Association (AIMMA) was the governing body recognised by IMMAF while MMA India – National Sports Federation was recognized by WMMA.
For the uninitiated, WMMA and IMMAF had announced a global unification some time back. Both parties cited that the unification was done for the betterment of the sport and also added that it will boost their efforts to include MMA in the Olympics.
In a statement given on Facebook, one of the members of MMA India, Ajit Sigamani noted that the federation is open for associating with more people for the betterment of MMA.
“There have been many ups and downs and tall claims in Indian MMA. We kept our heads down and fought the good fight. MMA India is now the Sole Governing body recognised by the unified WMMAA, IMMAF combine. Now that the smoke has cleared we would like to invite all related groups and organisations to start dialogue with us to see how we can cooperatively grow the sport in India. Whether you are a federation, association, independent fight promotion or entertainment platform… As long as you are ethical and put the sport first, we want to work with you,” he noted.
Sensei Suresh Gopi, head of MMA India, also made a statement of his own to the MMA fraternity in the country:
