MMA: Mayor in Brazil orders removal of legendary Cris Cyborg mural

Execution of paintwork directly on a wall known as ‘mural’ has been a common practice in the sport of MMA.

Be it the mural of the biggest star in the sport of MMA in ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor on a wall in Dublin or be it the cool mural of Nate Diaz covered in blood after beating McGregor on a wall in Stockton, a mural appreciates the spectacular contributions by that particular person.

Curitiba also had a mural of one it’s own, current UFC women’s featherweight champ and probably the most dangerous woman to ever step inside an MMA cage, Cris Cyborg.

However the mayor has decided to take it down. Mayor of Curitiba, Rafael Greca, has decided to remove the mural. Greca believes the wall of Afonso Botelho square, on which the mural is painted, should be restored and not painted.

”The temporary, precarious mural, painted on marble, was deteriorated,” Greca told MMA Fighting as to why he decided to “clean” the monument. Greca is not against painting another mural in tribute to the fighter, he said, but not over the marble. “On a regular wall, of course,” Greca said.

Obviously that didn’t go well with the champion Cyborg, not because it was her mural but the act symbolizes mayor’s lack of support for a local athlete.

Cyborg in an interview said, “If the mayor of Curitiba does not support an athlete who represents the city, imagine what happens with other athletes. It’s a shame. The right thing to do is to motivate young people to practice sports.”
