Muay Thai fights in Bangkok cause sharp increase in coronavirus cases

A Muay Thai event in Bangkok has now become a major source of the Coronavirus epidemic in Thailand. A major Muay Thai event took place on March 6 in the capital city of Thailand at the Lumpini Stadium.

This was a major event in Bangkok, as fans from all over Thailand flew in to enjoy the fights. The fights were also attended by numerous high profile individuals.

Amongst them were Army generals, actors, politicians, etc were amongst those present at the indoor stadium. Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and is followed vividly by a lot of people in the country.

After the fights, the fans that were present at the 5000-seat capacity stadium carried the coronavirus with them to other parts of Thailand. So far there have been 322 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Thailand and out of those 72 cases attended the Muay Thai matches in Bangkok.

The Thai health officials are working hard to track the positive coronavirus cases down.

The more people who report themselves, the easier it is for us to track down others with the virus before it’s too late,” said Dr. Thaveesin Visanuyothin, a spokesman for the Public Health Ministry. (H/T – SPORTSTAR)

Matthew Deane Chanthavanij who is an Australian born pop star was also present at the stadium. He posted a video on his Instagram account stating that he had tested positive for coronavirus and told those who have been in contact with him to take precautions.

“This is NOT a joke, for those that have been in close contact with me the last few days please take precautions I have the Covid -19 virus #covid19,” Matthew posted on Instagram.

Bangkok management is taking all the necessary precautions to curb the spread of coronavirus in the city. All the malls will be closed from 22nd March till 12th April in order to contain the spread of the virus. Boxing stadiums, Salons, parks have also been closed.

Those found violating the government order are to be fined up to 100,000 baht (S$4,446).
