In a heartfelt appeal that has since gone viral, Chungreng Koren, a renowned Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter from Manipur, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit his violence-stricken home state. The appeal was made from the center of the ring during a Matrix fight night.
Chungreng Koren speaks
Chungreng Koren, who was crowned the new Interim MFN Bantamweight champion at MFN 14, used his platform to shed light on the dire situation in Manipur. He said:
“This is my humble request to PM Modi ji. There is violence in Manipur and it has been almost a year. People are dying every day. So many are also in relief camps without proper food or water. Children are unable to study. We are worried about the future. Modi ji, please visit Manipur once and restore peace in the state.”
The MMA fighter’s emotional plea has resonated with many, and his video is now widely circulated on social media. Chungreng Koren’s appeal is a stark reminder of the ongoing violence in Manipur, which has claimed more than 219 lives since May last year. The violence erupted over the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, leading to clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
In a subsequent conversation, Chungreng Koren expressed his desire to speak more about the ground reality in Manipur but admitted that he got emotional and ran out of words. His message is clear: Manipur’s voice needs to be heard, and peace needs to be restored.
The plight of Manipur, as highlighted by Koren, calls for immediate attention and action. As the video continues to spread, the hope is that it will reach the corridors of power and prompt a much-needed intervention.
