One of the craziest announcements in combat sports this year, Jake Paul and Nate Diaz are all set to lock horns in the squared circle on 5th August in Dallas, a fight that will mark the latter’s debut as a professional boxer.
The fight was announced on Wednesday,- an eight round boxing showdown between the YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul (6-1) and former UFC welterweight title challenger Diaz (0-0). The fight will take place at the American Airlines Center- home of the Dallas Mavericks and the Dallas Stars, and will be aired on DAZN.
I’m here to conquer: Nate Diaz
Diaz parted ways with the UFC in September after fighting out of his contract. After making his final UFC appearance against Tony Ferguson at UFC 279, Diaz had been open about turning to boxing, and that opportunity has finally arrived for the Stockton superstar.
“Besides Canelo, he’s the biggest thang in boxing,” said Diaz in a statement following the announcement. “I’m here to conquer that. I’m the king of combat sports, and then I’m headed back to get my UFC belts. I f*cked up Conor for acting out and now here I am again, like a super hero of the Real Fight game, the king of the Real Fight game.”
“Problem Child” is going to knock out the “Stockton G”: Jake Paul
After staying undefeated in his first six pro boxing bouts, Paul tasted his first defeat in the ring against Tommy Fury back in February this year- a fight that had been in the making for quite some time.
There were talks surrounding making KSI his next fight, but it was finally Diaz who will be locking horns against Paul, and the 26-year-old is fixated on securing a knock out in the fight.
“My last fight didn’t end the way I wanted, but the result was the best thing that could have happened to my professional boxing aspirations,” commented Paul. “Now the world thinks I am vulnerable, when all I am is more focused than ever. My team wanted me to take an easy fight like KSI next, but that’s not how I am built. Nate Diaz is considered one of the most bad-ass fighters of all time, but he and his team have been running their mouths for too long.”
“People tell me Nate has been training with Andre Ward for years, that he has insane stamina, that he refuses to back down. Good for f*cking Nate. I haven’t forgotten about the slap backstage in Arizona, and on August 5th, a ‘Problem Child’ is going to piece up and knock out the ‘Stockton G,’” he added. [H/T MMA Junkie]
